Wärtsilä has begun construction of a 50MW/100MWh energy storage system for the Gramme 1 project in central-eastern Belgium.
The company said the site is expected to complete in Q2 2027, with the order booked in Q2 2025.
The project marks Wärtsilä’s first participation in Belgium’s capacity remuneration mechanism, which supports grid services such as frequency and voltage management.
Guillaume Poncelet, managing director at Kallima Energies, said: “This project with Wärtsilä underscores our commitment to dependable, flexible energy in Belgium.”
He added: “By delivering essential ancillary services, the system will play a vital role in balancing the grid.”
David Hebert, vice president of global sales management at Wärtsilä Energy Storage, said: “This project in partnership with Gramme Storage 1 reflects our shared focus on supporting Belgium’s energy security and grid stability during the transition to a more renewable power system.”
Gramme 1 will use Wärtsilä’s Gridsolve Quantum2 system and its Gems control software under an engineered equipment delivery contract with a long-term service agreement.
