Doosan Enerbility has selected Andritz to supply pump turbine units for the new 500MW Yeongdong pumped storage power plant in Chungcheong Province, South Korea.
Andritz said the project supports national goals for renewable energy expansion and grid stability.
The company added that it has previously delivered or rehabilitated about 40 units totalling over 1GW in South Korea.
“As we move toward a net-zero carbon future, energy storage has never been more important,” said Alexander Schwab, senior vice president market management Andritz Hydropower.
“As the most proven, reliable, and cost-effective energy storage technology, pumped storage is a key enabler for the energy transition that allows efficient energy management by balancing energy demand and supply,” Schwab added.
Andritz’s scope includes the design of two pump turbine units, motor-generators, auxiliaries and digital control, governor and protection systems, along with installation supervision and commissioning.
The Yeongdong project is being delivered jointly by Doosan Enerbility and Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power, with completion scheduled for 2030.
