EnBW has taken the final investment decision on a 400MW/800MWh battery energy storage system at Philippsburg Energy Park.
The company said the facility will be one of the largest in Germany and will be built without government subsidies.
EnBW added that Philippsburg is also home to two nuclear units under dismantling and a direct-current converter developed by TransnetBW for the ULTRANET link.
“This investment decision is a key step in making our energy system more flexible,” said Peter Heydecker, chief operating officer for sustainable generation infrastructure at EnBW.
He added that battery energy storage systems are indispensable for balancing fluctuating wind and solar generation with demand and are an ideal complement to hydrogen-ready gas-fired plants.
EnBW plans to start construction in early summer 2026 with operation expected by the end of 2027, and it stated the BESS can provide enough electricity to power around 100,000 homes.
The project is to be financed from revenues from electricity sales and grid services.
