Statkraft advances Shetland green ammonia plans

Statkraft batteries step up to stabilise Irish grid

Statkraft has outlined plans for the Tagdale Green Ammonia project in Shetland after securing an option on a site around 3.5km north-west of Lerwick.

The scheme will comprise an electrolytic hydrogen-to-green-ammonia facility of up to 80MW adjacent to the Hill of Tagdale and has been shortlisted for funding under the UK Government’s Hydrogen Allocation Round 2, according to Statkraft.

The company said the project will produce carbon-free ammonia for fertiliser and marine fuel applications, helping reinstate domestic ammonia production in the UK and contribute to industrial decarbonisation and energy transition goals.

Statkraft added that the development will create about 20 jobs and provide upskilling opportunities for workers in oil and gas, with operation targeted by the end of 2029.

Public exhibitions will take place in Shetland on 19-20 November, with further events due next year ahead of a planning application to Shetland Islands Council.

The developer recently announced Shetland Hydrogen Project 2 near the former Scatsta airport and has three wind farms on Shetland in pre-construction.

Brie Foster, Statkraft’s hydrogen project manager, said: “Confirmation of Statkraft’s second Shetland green hydrogen to ammonia project shows the huge potential of the area to be a hub for innovative technologies. This project will play an important role in helping deliver food and energy security at home, as well as contribute more widely to the transition to cleaner energy. We’re in the early stage of development of our plans and will work closely with local stakeholders and the community in Shetland, as our proposals progress, and I look forward to sharing more details at public exhibitions later in the month.”
