Germany’s Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) has granted planning approval for Vattenfall’s 630MW Nordlicht 2 offshore wind farm in the North Sea, giving the green light for construction of the second project in the company’s Nordlicht cluster.
Located more than 84 kilometers off the East Frisian island of Borkum and about 96 kilometers from the German mainland, Nordlicht 2 will comprise 44 turbines, each with a capacity of 15MW.
Vattenfall has previously signed a conditional agreement with Vestas to supply its V236-15.0 MW turbines for both the Nordlicht 1 and 2 projects.
FID was taken for the wind farm earlier this year, with the second phase subject to an irrevocable permit.
The permit for N2 has now been issued but needs to follow a defined process in Germany before the permit becomes irrevocable. This is expected by the end of the year and FID will only become effective after this.
The project is scheduled for completion and full commissioning by the end of 2028.
Nordlicht 2 will be connected to Germany’s onshore grid via the NOR-6-3 grid connection system, operated by Amprion, which includes the BorWin delta converter platform and the BorWin4 high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission line.
