Fugro has completed extensive land and marine site investigations for TenneT Germany to support the development of the LanWin1 and LanWin2 offshore grid connection projects.
The two schemes form part of TenneT’s 2GW programme, which aims to deliver at least 14 offshore connection systems linking wind farms to the onshore grid and supplying clean power to up to 35 million European households.
Fugro’s work on the LanWin2 route included onshore and nearshore investigations using its GroundIQ service, which enabled low-impact geophysical surveys such as electrical resistivity profiling and patented 3D ambient noise tomography – a non-intrusive technique that maps subsurface conditions using natural vibrations.
The geotechnical campaign comprised borehole drilling and cone penetration testing at 15 locations, including four in intertidal zones. Fugro configured its ARAN 250 jack-up platform for shallow operations to minimise seabed disturbance and environmental impact.
At sea, the company deployed four survey vessels – the Fugro Frontier, Fugro Pioneer, and Scotia for geophysical, unexploded ordnance and electromagnetic crossing surveys, and the Fugro Resolve for shallow geotechnical investigations using its Blue Snake system, which integrates CPT and sampling technology in a single deployment.
Data from the investigations will be delivered to TenneT via Fugro’s Virgeo cloud platform to inform cable design, routing and installation, supporting the long-term performance and environmental integrity of the infrastructure.
Fugro regional business line director for land Jaco Stemmet said: “Contributing to a project of this scale allows us to demonstrate how high-quality Geo-data can drive smarter, more sustainable infrastructure decisions.
“Our integrated site investigation approach, combing land and marine expertise with environmentally sensitive operations, will help support the successful delivery of LanWin1 and LanWin2 and contribute to Europe’s sustainable energy future.”
The company said the contract builds on its long-standing partnership with TenneT Germany and highlights its continued role in enabling the development of Europe’s offshore energy infrastructure.
