Repsol and Forestalia launch 1.6GW hybrid project

Repsol and Forestalia launch 1.6GW hybrid project

Repsol and Forestalia are developing one of Spain’s largest energy hybridisation projects in Aragon, combining gas and wind generation totalling more than 1600MW.

Repsol’s 818MW combined cycle power plant in Escatron, Zaragoza, will be hybridised with fifteen wind farms providing a combined capacity of 805MW acquired from Forestalia.

Forestalia will continue as developer of the wind sites until commissioning.

Repsol said the project will share a single grid connection point, allowing both energy sources to complement each other, stabilise supply and optimise infrastructure use.

The wind farms are in the processing and development phase and have received favourable Environmental Impact Statements.

Repsol said the facilities will share evacuation infrastructure to the Escatron plant, improving resource efficiency and operational integration.

The hybrid project will also support the development of a large data centre in the area being promoted by a separate investor.

Repsol has secured grid connection approval from Red Electrica de Espana for 402MW of renewable self-consumption for the data centre, complemented by more than 800MW of additional support energy.

Joao Costeira, executive managing director of low carbon generation at Repsol, said the project optimises the company’s renewable portfolio and enables the data centre to self-consume wind power.

Forestalia’s director of wind and solar development Fernando Samper Garcia said the initiative strengthens the company’s commitment to renewable energy in Aragon and offers an opportunity to deliver innovative solutions.
