Grenergy has broken ground on the Monte Aguila hybrid solar and battery storage plant in Chile’s Biobío region.
Located in El Cabrero, the project represents a $264m investment and will comprise 340MW of solar generation and 960MWh of storage. It is due to come online in early 2027.
The ceremony was attended by the ministers of finance, economy, and labour, along with regional and industry representatives.
Monte Aguila forms one of five phases of Grenergy’s Central Oasis platform in central Chile, which will total 1.1GW of solar capacity and 3.8GWh of storage when completed.
Each phase has secured a power purchase agreement, including a 15-year base load deal signed in April with Codelco to supply 0.5TWh of renewable power annually on a 24/7 basis.
Grenergy said Central Oasis follows the model of its Oasis de Atacama development, a 2GW and 11GWh hybrid platform in northern Chile that is due to complete in 2027 with a €2bn investment.
The company added that both projects are laying the foundation for a new generation of hybrid renewable assets it intends to replicate in other markets, including Spain.
Under its 2025–2027 strategy, Grenergy plans to apply the hybrid model to the Escuderos project in Castilla-La Mancha, which will feature 200MW of solar and 704MWh of storage.
Grenergy is also advancing its standalone European battery initiative, Greenbox, led by the Oviedo project in Spain, as part of efforts to strengthen its position in renewable generation and storage.
