Renewable Power Capital and Greenfield have secured planning permission for two new battery energy storage projects in the UK.
The 60MW Canalside project in Staffordshire and 22MW Sacketts Hill scheme in Kent bring the partners’ portfolio with consent to 194.7MW.
They follow earlier approvals for Cardiff, Tredington and Steventon totalling 112.7MW.
Construction at Canalside and Sacketts Hill is expected to last between eight and twelve months, with both projects to connect to the distribution network.
Sacketts Hill has a 2031 connection date and Canalside 2029, though both have been submitted for gate two advancement to bring these forward.
Cyrille Sokpor, senior vice president for UK and Poland development at RPC, said: “Securing planning permission for two additional BESS projects totalling 82MW is a testament to the strength and longevity of our partnership with Greenfield.”
He added that BESS “is so vital to driving the energy transition” and to ensuring grid stability in line with the UK government’s 2030 clean power mission.
David Ring, UK managing director at Greenfield, said the approvals “demonstrate how battery storage can deliver real flexibility to the grid while enhancing biodiversity at a local level”.
Canalside is expected to deliver a 49.51% net gain in area-based habitat and 31.68% increase in linear habitats, while Sacketts Hill will provide a 125% net biodiversity gain.
Since signing their partnership in 2023, RPC and Greenfield have grown their joint pipeline to more than 5.5GW across Great Britain, Italy and Finland.
