Dongfang has installed a prototype 26MW offshore turbine in China.

The Asian OEM, which claims to hardware is the most powerful installed globally to date, erected the unit (pictured) at the Dongying test centre.

The 26MW machine’s rotor covers a swept area of 77,000 square metres, according to the company.

It uses integrated semi-direct drive technology and features a typhoon-resistant design.

“Its dual typhoon-resistant design can withstand a Category 17 super typhoon, enhancing the unit’s safety and reliability during typhoons,” said Dongfang.

“Furthermore, the 26MW offshore wind turbine achieves fully domestically produced electronic control systems, resolving key component technical challenges.”

The unit is suited for medium to high wind speed sea areas above 8 meters per second.

Machines with capacities of between 20MW and 26MW are available, the company added.

“From the first 10MW, 13MW, 18MW, and finally the 26MW unit, Dongfang Electric Corporation has actively leveraged its technological innovation, industrial control, and safety support capabilities, striving to be a ‘three-pronged leader’ and helping my country achieve a leapfrog improvement in offshore wind power equipment capabilities,” the OEM stated.

“Going forward, Dongfang Electric Corporation will bravely shoulder its responsibility and mission to become a manufacturing powerhouse, continuously contributing to building a new development landscape, promoting high-quality development, and advancing Chinese-style modernisation.”
