Mitie Power & Grid and Elements Green have broken ground on the 360MW/720MWh Staythorpe battery storage project in Newark, Nottinghamshire.
The £71.5m facility, one of the largest in Europe, will store enough renewable energy to power more than 95,000 homes for a full day once operational in mid-2027.
Mitie, via G2 Energy, will lead design and construction of the system and its 400kV grid substation, while Elements Green will deliver a 25.7% biodiversity net gain through new woodland, wildflower meadow and tree planting.
Around 60 jobs are expected during the build phase, with the project having a planned lifespan of 40 years.
Mitie managing director Mark Caskey said Staythorpe BESS “is a perfect example” of applying infrastructure expertise to the clean energy transition, adding the scheme will create “real value for local communities”.
Elements Green chief executive Rasmus Friis said the development is “about more than storing clean energy – it’s about working hand in hand with our neighbours to deliver lasting value”.
Energy minister Miatta Fahnbulleh said battery storage will help protect homes and businesses from price shocks “by unlocking our renewable power potential”.
