Balance Power has secured planning approval for a 49500KW battery storage project in Radwell Bury, Hertfordshire.
The facility will store surplus renewable energy for release during peak demand, powering about 26,767 homes and supporting the stability of the UK grid.
Comprising 48 battery units with two hours’ total storage, the project is expected to cut CO2 emissions by around 18,281 tonnes annually.
Balance Power said the development will achieve a 44.25% biodiversity net gain through measures including woodland belt protection, hedgerow retention and meadow grassland planting.
North Herts Council approved the scheme after a community consultation process that led to design changes to address local concerns.
Connections team member Ryan Stott said: “We’re pleased to have received unanimous approval for this vital project and appreciate the strong engagement from the community and local council throughout the process.”
The company is now securing a grid connection date and plans to restore the site to agricultural use at the end of its operational life.
Since 2017, Balance Power has advanced 39 energy projects to planning consent and has more than 2GW in development.
