Dominion Energy Virginia has unveiled plans to install a 1MW solar array at the future home of minor league baseball team the Richmond Flying Squirrels.
The project will see more than 1700 panels added to the roof and car park of CarMax Park once the team’s 2026 season concludes.
According to Dominion, the installation will be among the largest in professional baseball and will generate enough carbon-free electricity to power 250 homes at peak output.
The development is subject to local and state regulatory approvals.
“We’re thrilled that such an iconic Richmond landmark will help deliver reliable, affordable and increasingly clean power for our customers,” said Dominion Energy Virginia president Ed Baine.
The array will feature two tiers of rooftop panels and five solar-covered carports in an adjacent lot, using previously developed land to support the company’s clean energy rollout.
Flying Squirrels managing partner Lou DiBella said: “This project isn’t just about what happens inside the ballpark; it’s about stepping up as a community partner and using our platform to help bring clean energy to the city.”
CarMax Park is under construction in Richmond’s new Diamond District and is scheduled to open in time for the 2026 season.
City of Richmond sustainability director Laura Thomas said: “This solar project represents the kind of integrated, collaborative approach that’s essential to achieving Richmond’s clean energy goals.”
Dominion said the installation will join the utility’s growing Virginia solar fleet, which is currently the third largest in the US and generates enough electricity to power over 750,000 homes.
