Hybrid solar-BESS in Hawaii powers up

A hybrid 30MW solar and 120MWh battery energy storage plant in Hawaii is now fully operational.

Ingeteam has completed the commissioning work for the 11 inverter power stations supplied for Innergex Renewable Energy’s Hale Kuawehi project (pictured).

The project, located in the town of Waimea, will be able to supply power to some 14,600 Hawaiian homes. The batteries will charge during the day and will be able to inject the stored energy into the grid when necessary for up to four hours at a time.

The electricity generated by Hale Kuawehi will be acquired over the next 25 years by the Hawaii Electric Light Company (HECO) through a long-term power purchase agreement.

Vice president and general manager of Ingeteam’s solar and BESS business in the US Nohra Nasr said: “It is quite rewarding for Ingeteam to contribute to Hawaii’s goal of being 100% renewable and free of fossil fuels using our technology.

“We appreciate the confidence of Innergex to grant us this opportunity to be a part of a more resilient and sustainable grid.”

Ingeteam supplied 11 fully integrated inverter power stations, which were connected to both the photovoltaic panels and the batteries. The company said this system offers high power density and is delivered as an all-in-one solution for quick installation in the field.

To date, Ingeteam has supplied or is contracted to supply the US market with 9.5GW of photovoltaic and battery inverters, supporting the country’s transition to cleaner energy systems that are less dependent on fossil fuels.
