Eolus, Hydro Rein seek permit for Garpenberg

Eolus and Hydro Rein have submitted a permit application for the Garpenberg wind farm project in Sweden.

The application was sent to the Land and Environment Court in Nacka to examine whether the wind farm can be built in accordance with Swedish environmental legislation.

The application is a key step in the process of clarifying whether the conditions exist to build the wind farm between Garpenberg and Horndal, in accordance with current environmental requirements.

The review takes place in several stages and includes, among other things, an agency review, supplementary investigations and municipal approval at a later stage.

“We want to be clear that this is not an attempt to speed up any decision on the part of the municipalities,” said Julia Lundkvist, project manager for the joint venture Fornybar by Eolus Hydro Rein. “The application is a prerequisite for being able to proceed with the environmental assessment, in parallel with Hedemora municipality completing its planning work.

“We have great respect for that process, as it is ultimately the municipalities that decide whether the environmental assessment can proceed.”

Garpenberg wind farm is located in the municipalities of Avesta and Hedemora.

Following the consultation process, the project site has been adjusted to reduce the impact on a local recreational area.

The development area is now just over eight square kilometres in size and is estimated to be able to accommodate up to 17 wind turbines with a maximum total height of 300 metres.

The previous plans were for 21 wind turbines covering just over nine square kilometres.

The wind farm, which is scheduled to become operational in 2032, is expected to produce 410GWh annually.
