The Swedish government has approved cable permits for the Galene and Poseidon offshore wind farms, enabling construction of subsea connections within the sites and to the mainland grid.
The two North Sea projects will generate around 7TWh of fossil-free electricity annually once operational.
Galene, located 21km west of Varberg, received government consent in May 2023 and will feature up to 21 turbines across 42km².
Poseidon, approved in November 2024, will comprise up to 81 turbines over 152km², sited around 40km northwest of Gothenburg.
The latest permits allow for cable-laying on Sweden’s continental shelf and within its territorial waters for the Galene grid connection.
Cable construction at Galene will coincide with the wind farm’s eight-year build-out schedule, while Poseidon’s cable works have a 15-year construction window starting from this week’s decision.
