RWE and AWS deepen clean energy partnership

RWE and Amazon Web Services (AWS) have signed a strategic framework agreement to deepen collaboration on clean energy delivery and digital transformation, the companies announced on 12 June.

Under the agreement, RWE will continue to supply carbon-free electricity to support Amazon’s data centre growth, while AWS will provide cloud services-including artificial intelligence and advanced analytics-to support RWE’s digital innovation strategy.

“This strategic framework agreement with AWS represents a significant milestone in our commitment to supporting the digital infrastructure that powers our modern economy with clean energy,” said Ulf Kerstin, chief commercial officer of RWE Supply & Trading.

He added: “Advancing digitalisation and electrification are also driving up demand for electricity. Our competitive portfolio of renewable and flexible energy generation is ideally suited to meet this demand.”

Howard Gefen, general manager for energy and utilities at AWS, said: “Through this expanded collaboration with RWE, we’ll continue to explore new sources of carbon-free energy to help decarbonise our operations.”

He added: “Using advanced capabilities like artificial intelligence and analytics, we’ll help RWE accelerate their digital transformation, enabling smarter decision-making and enhanced operational performance throughout their energy business.”

The two companies have already signed seven US-based power purchase agreements totalling 1.1GW, with electricity supplied from RWE’s wind and solar facilities-some already online and others under construction.

AWS has also helped RWE migrate mission-critical trading applications to the cloud, delivering a 30% performance improvement in end-of-day runtimes.

The latest agreement is expected to bolster RWE’s innovation across trading, commercial asset optimisation and AI-powered forecasting. It also deepens collaboration between AWS and RWE’s AI Research Laboratory in Seattle.
