ABL has been appointed as marine warranty surveyor for the subsea cable transport and installation phase of the Champlain Hudson Power Express project.
The 1250MW interconnector will deliver electricity from Canadian hydro plants to New York City via a 339-mile HVDC transmission line.
Of that, 193 miles will be buried subsea in Lake Champlain, the Hudson River and the Harlem River, with installation works taking place throughout 2024 and 2025.
The project’s remaining 146 miles are overland.
Once completed, the CHPE will be the longest fully buried transmission line in the US and will account for around 20% of New York City’s power needs.
ABL’s scope includes reviewing and approving technical procedures, equipment suitability, and on-site witnessing of marine operations such as DP trials and installation activities.
The consultancy’s US office is leading the project, with support from colleagues in Canada, the UK, the Netherlands, Germany, Norway, Brazil and South Korea.
“This is an important energy transition project for the USA and Canada,” said Nicolas Cazares, managing director of ABL in the Americas.
“ABL has both the marine and engineering expertise to ensure safe and efficient delivery, backed by our global track-record in subsea interconnector transport and installation.”
ABL is part of Oslo-listed ABL Group ASA, which provides marine and energy consulting services in more than 44 countries.
