ZX deploys lidar on Faroe Islands

ZX Measurement Services has deployed lidar to support Effo with the progression of the 100MW Eysturlund Energy Park Development in the Faroe Islands.

Effo is the largest energy company in the Faroe Islands and is the owner of the largest wind farm in the Faroe Islands, Gellingarklettur.

Gellingarklettur can produce energy to all the households in the Faroe Islands.

The energy park Eysturlund is the next step in the energy transition with focus on electrification of the industry.

Eysturlund will feature 24 x 4.2MW Vestas wind turbines and is expected to generate 350GWh of renewable energy annually.

This production of clean energy should offset around 10% of the fossil fuel consumption in the Faroe Islands, marking a substantial advancement in the region’s commitment to sustainability.

ZX Measurement Services has provided the ZX 300 wind lidar and monthly data and reporting services.

The wind lidar will be utilised for a 12-month wind resource assessment campaign, gathering critical data to optimise the design and energy output of the park.

The lidar technology enables precise wind measurements at multiple heights, providing essential insights for turbine placement and overall project feasibility.

Heini Ellingsgaard, head of renewable energy at Effo, said: “At Effo we are committed to deliver green energy to the whole country.

“Using wind Lidar’s high quality data measurements and reliability, we hope the data will improve and validate our design decisions ensuring we make the most of the onsite wind resource and ensure the energy park is as efficient as possible.”

Ian Ravey, managing director at ZX Measurement Services, said: “We are excited to be supporting Effo with their latest development in the Faroe Islands.

“This will mark our most northerly deployment Lidar installation to date, continuing to show our flexibility and confidence in the technology to deliver accurate and reliable wind measurements.

“Our approach to providing world-class wind measurements allows clients to access low-cost and accurate wind measurements using the industry-leading ZX 300 Lidars.

“We pride ourselves in providing wind data as a service throughout Europe to deliver projects such as these.”
