RWE is calling for targeted reforms to the UK’s Contracts for Difference (CfD) scheme to accelerate offshore wind deployment and protect consumers.
The company’s director of offshore development for UK and Ireland, Danielle Lane (pictured) made the comments in a report looking into the role of off offshore wind in delivering CP2030, and the actions required to keep the Clean Power target on track.
She argued in the second edition of RWE’s Clean Power Reflections Series, that extending CfD contracts to 25 years to reflect project lifespans and drive down costs.
The company is also calling for more transparent auctions – with clear capacity targets and a fixed schedule through 2028 – to give developers the certainty they need.
With a record number of fully consented projects expected by the next auction round, RWE warns that allowing unconsented projects to bid would create chaos in the supply chain and push up prices.
The company is also pressing for immediate clarity on grid connection timelines and for wake effects – where one wind farm disrupts another – not to be factored into planning, saying the current uncertainty threatens investor confidence.
