Offshore substation installed for Changhua 2b&4

The offshore substation for Orsted’s 920MW Greater Changhua 2b and 4 wind farms in Taiwan has been installed.

The company hailed the installation as a “landmark milestone” for the construction of the offshore wind project.

An Orsted spokesperson said: “This achievement is a significant step in our journey, from the initial steel cut back in July 2023, to the Seatrium sail-away in February from Singapore to Taiwan, culminating in the installation of the OSS jacket foundation and final topside.”

Orsted said the installation went smoothly despite challenging weather conditions.

The jacket and piles and the topside were transported by Boskalis’s Mighty Servant 3 and Transshelf vessels.

Heerema Marine Contractors’ heavy lift vessel Aegir then completed the installation of the offshore substation.

“This success is a proof to the dedication and expertise of our team, who maintained the highest standards of quality, health, safety, and environment,” the spokesperson added.

Orsted has also completed the first export cable selection for the project.

With the arrival of the Wind Maker vessel in Taiwan, the company says it is ready to begin the installation of 66 suction bucket jacket foundations and wind turbines.

The Greater Changhua 2b and 4 offshore wind farms are expected to complete offshore installation by the end of 2025 and be fully connected to the grid in 2026.

The project will comprise 66 Siemens Gamesa turbines, each with a capacity of 14MW.
