Statkraft powers up 47MW Spanish wind farm

Capstone tuned to Ontario wind quartet

Statkraft has commissioned the 47MW Cernégula wind farm in Spain.

This is the second wind farm Statkraft has developed in Castilla y León and in the province of Burgos, where it already has the Páramo de Poza wind farm in operation.

Statkraft is also advancing plans to develop a new wind and solar hybrid project in this province.

Comprising eight turbines, the Cernégula project is capable of generating enough energy to match the average annual consumption of 36,000 homes.

With a total investment of €54m, the development has contributed to the creation of 140 jobs.

Environmental measures taken by Statkraft include the installation of stereoscopic systems for monitoring birds.

These include an automatic shutdown module for the wind turbines to avoid the risk of collision.

In addition, Statkraft has promoted, together with the Natural Heritage Foundation of Castilla y León, the creation of a wetland area in Valdivielso, in the municipality of Santa Olalla and a bird observatory in the perimeter area of the lagoon.

Statkraft is now planning a new renewable development in this province, which will be its first wind and solar hybridisation project in Spain.

The Abrazadilla project will consist of three wind turbines, which will add up to 21.6MW of installed power, and a photovoltaic solar plant, which will have 16.5MW of installed power.

The solar plant will occupy an area of approximately 40 hectares.

The Abrazadilla project will be located in the municipalities of Ausines, Ibeas de Juarros, Arceo de Burgos and Revilla del Campo.

Statkraft is in the process of informing local communities about the project, which has already received grid access and connection permits, and environmental viability approval.
