An 8MW wind farm in Dorset, a southern coastal county in England, is now operational.
Alaska Wind Farm has been developed and installed by a joint venture between renewable energy company Infinergy Advanced Assets and Holme Estate.
The wind farm, near Wareham, is the first of its kind in Dorset, which has a limited potential for large-scale onshore wind development due to a variety of environmental and technical constraints, such as landscape designations and limited grid connection availability.
The wind farm shares its grid connection with an adjacent solar farm, ensuring an efficient use of the local grid network.
A spokesperson for the project said: “We are delighted that the wind farm has now reached full operation.
“It hasn’t always been plain sailing, due to grid connection delays the construction stage took longer than anticipated.
“With that behind us, we can now look forward to supplying a substantial amount of green power to the local network for years to come, whilst making an important contribution to Dorset’s renewable energy ambitions.”
The wind farm is situated at the sand and gravel extraction site Masters Quarry in East Stoke.
It consists of four refurbished Vestas V80 2MW wind turbines, which were given a new lease of life after 10 years of operation in Belgium.
They were acquired, refurbished, transported and rebuilt by Dutch second-hand wind turbine specialists Business In Wind.
The wind farm is expected to generate approximately 17GWh of renewable electricity every year for up to 20 years.
