Alfen is to deliver one of the first large-scale four-hour battery energy storage systems (BESS) in the Netherlands.
The company signed a deal with consortium FlevoBESS for the project, which is on track for completion in the third quarter of this year.
The 31.6MW/126.4MWh BESS will be located near Dronten, in Flevoland, a central part of the Netherlands.
The system will support the region’s ambitious energy transition goals by stabilising the grid, enabling renewable integration, and preparing for future expansions to 204MWh by 2028.
Commercial director for Alfen’s energy storage solutions Stephanie Schockaert said: “The Alfen team is very proud of the intensive preparatory phase with FlevoBESS and to partner with them on such a landmark project, both in terms of size and solutions.
“This system marks a significant step forward in energy storage capacity and technology, demonstrating our ability to deliver large-scale, future-ready solutions for our customers.”
The project integrates Alfen’s latest generation of battery containers, which have an energy density of up to 4MWh within a 20ft container.
This design enables efficient back-to-back and side-by-side installations, significantly reducing the required footprint, Alfen said.
Paired with Alfen’s largest inverters on the market, these containers deliver up to four hours of discharge capability, providing flexibility for grid balancing, energy trading and integrating renewable energy sources.
The design includes provisions for future scalability.
