Scotland’s Deputy First Minister Kate Forbes (pictured) has called on the UK government to reform the grid connections process and Contracts for Difference policy to ensure offshore wind farms north of the border can progress.
Forbes said Holyrood needs London as well as regulator Ofgem and system operator NESO to overhaul the network connections system as it is one of the key barriers for Scottish offshore wind farms.
“Otherwise, there is a risk that we will be left behind,” she said.
“We need these projects to help us move beyond the current economic paradigm.”
She told delegates at Scottish Renewables Offshore Wind 2025 that the UK government must also ensure there is enough budget in the upcoming AR7 and future auctions to help deliver Scottish fixed-bottom projects, as well as for floating wind farms.
Holyrood is engaging collaboratively with the UK government on these points, she added on Day 1 of the industry event in Glasgow.
Forbes said offshore wind represents a “once-in-a-lifetime” opportunity to create economic growth and jobs in Scotland.
“We are at the beginning but with every investment we are getting closer to that objective,” she said.
“The momentum has been building and we cannot afford for there to be a pause. Instead we need more investment, bold steps and commitment from every corner.
“As a Scottish government we are willing and committed to take bold steps to make that apparent.”
She added: “For me, this isn’t just about meeting targets but about creating long term wealth and prosperity for our people.”
