There is room for Chinese turbine manufacturer Mingyang to open a Scottish factory, according to the country’s deputy first minister Kate Forbes.
Forbes told the Financial Times there is space for both the Asian player and Vestas to set up shop in Scotland.
Mingyang has progressed plans through the Strategic Investment Model while the Danish OEM has plans for a factory in Leith.
“I think there is room [for Mingyang and Vestas],” Forbes said in an interview with the Financial Times.
“I think if you look at the ambitions right now for the transition, the transformation required in our supply chain needs to be enormous.”
Forbes said “due diligence” and “an element of caution” would be needed when weighing up its decision, according to the newspaper, but that Scotland would work “carefully on a case-by-case basis with any inward investor”.
“What I don’t want to see is the fact that our wind or our natural resources are essentially creating a lot of jobs outside Scotland,” Forbes said.
Mingyang has been tipped to supply Cerulean Winds’ 6GW UK floating complex but the developer has said there are no formal agreements and it is exploring multiple options.
