Aquila turns sod on 56MW German battery

Aquila Clean Energy EMEA has started construction of a new battery storage project with a capacity of 56MW/112MWh, in Wetzen, Germany.

The plant is part of a larger portfolio of Aquila’s, which is targeting the development of 14 battery storage projects with a total storage capacity of over 900MW in Germany.

Commissioning is scheduled for the beginning of 2026.

The plant will be equipped with advanced lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cells that are free of nickel and cobalt and offer greater sustainability, safety and longevity.

Wetzen is located in a region that offers favourable conditions for the use of renewable energies.

The new plant will help to ensure the stability of the electricity grid and support the integration of renewable energies.

Director of energy storage commercial at Aquila Clean Energy EMEA Kilian Leykam said: “The start of construction of our battery storage project in Wetzen is another milestone for Aquila Clean Energy EMEA in Germany.

“The German market is a key market for battery storage systems in Europe.

“The demand for energy storage solutions to compensate for fluctuating electricity generation from renewable energies is increasing.

“Projects like the one in Wetzen are important steps to meet this demand and drive forward the decarbonisation of the economy.”

As a two-hour storage system, the plant in Wetzen is suitable for both balancing energy and optimising the wholesale market.

The project in Wetzen is the second BESS plant under construction of Aquila Clean Energy EMEA on the German market, for which the company has taken over the complete procurement and management of the construction phase.

Trina Storage, a global leader in integrated energy storage solutions, will supply the company’s LFP cells as part of its Elementa battery storage system.

H&MV Engineering will manage the construction work, including the connections to the high-voltage grid.

Aquila Clean Energy EMEA currently manages a BESS portfolio of 4.5GW across Europe.
