Acciona Energia has begun injecting clean power into the grid from its Forty Mile wind farm in southern Alberta, Canada.
The 280MW project (pictured), which is progressing as planned, will be completed in the first quarter of 2025.
Forty Mile is located about 50km south-west of Medicine Hat, Alberta.
Consisting of 49 Nordex turbines, it will be one of the 10 largest wind farms in Canada and the largest facility of its kind that Acciona Energia has built to date in North America.
Today’s announcement marks the commissioning of the first nine turbines, which have already been completed and connected to Alberta’s provincial power grid.
The remaining units will be gradually connected over the next few months as they are completed and commissioned, as is customary for wind projects of this size.
The Forty Mile wind farm is Acciona Energia’s fifth in Canada and, once completed, will bring the company’s total installed capacity in North America to more than 3GW.
Construction of the project is generating around 250 jobs and will maintain up to 25 permanent jobs when fully operational.
In addition to generating clean electricity, Forty Mile will bring new tax revenue to the local economy for decades.
In addition, Acciona Energia provides direct financial support to local non-profit organizations that provide services to the communities near the project, such as Forty Mile Family & Community Support Services, Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter Society and Root Cellar Food & Wellness Hub.
