180MW Finnish duo enter production

Finnish developer Suomen Hyötytuuli Oy has taken two new wind farms with a total capacity of over 180MW into production.

The two arrays are the 90MW Oosinselkä on the west coast of Finland, and the 90MW Alajoki-Peuralinna in Ostrobothnia.

The wind farms are expected to produce as much as 500,000 megawatt hours annually.

With the completion of Oosinselkä and Alajoki-Peuralinna wind farms, the wind energy production of Suomen Hyötytuuli is nearly doubled, it said.

The construction of the Oosinselkä (pictured) site in Pori and Eurajoki was started in 2022. Its 15 Vestas turbines produce 250,000 megawatt hours annually.

The Alajoki-Peuralinna array, situated in Perho and Kyyjärvi, is made up of 14 Siemens Gamesa turbines that generate an estimated 250,000-megawatt hours annual production. The construction work was started in 2021.

The main contractor in both projects was Infra Builders Oy, wind farm transformers are supplied by Hitachi Energy Finland and the substations by Eltel Networks Oy.

“Both projects were delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic and the impacts of Russia’s war in Ukraine as well as the fire at the Hitachi transformer factory in Vaasa, so we were not short of challenges,” said Suomen Hyötytuuli project director Harri Suutari.

“Now both projects have been successfully completed, thanks to all the parties involved.”

Suomen Hyötytuuli currently has nine wind farms in operation in Finland, one under construction and several in planning phase.

The company’s largest wind farm project so far, the 236MW Siikajoki, is expected to be finalised in early 2025.

At the completion of Siikajoki’s 38 turbines, Suomen Hyötytuuli’s wind energy production reaches 650MW and its annual production 1900 gigawatt hours.
