SSEN welcomes largest graduate intake

SSEN Transmission has welcomed its biggest ever intake of new graduates this week.

Held at a special induction into the company in their Perth headquarters, the 46 new graduates (pictured above) were welcomed into the business to get started on a unique two-year graduate scheme.

The scheme will see the new team members embark on various placements across different departments in SSEN Transmission – from working in the company’s environment team to electrical engineering to working in the transmission control centre – helping to gain insights and practical experience in developing skills to lead to a fulltime career in energy.

On completion of the two-year programme graduates will then move into specialist roles and help be part of the team working to deliver a network for energy security and net zero.

This week also sees applications open for next year’s Graduate Programme, which kicks off in September 2025.  Applications can be submitted through SSE’s career page.

The new graduates join at an exciting time of growth for SSEN Transmission, with the company recently welcoming the arrival of its 2000th team member earlier this month – marking a five-fold increase in employee headcount in just five years.

The company is also making great strides in its recruitment for 500 new jobs by the end of March 2025, with even more new roles expected to be created next year.

SSEN Transmission is currently investing £20bn in a major upgrade of the high voltage electricity transmission network across the north of Scotland, with a series of projects known as the Pathway to 2030 programme.

The project has been assessed as supporting over 20,000 jobs throughout its development and delivery in the UK – 9000 of which will be in Scotland.

“With such an ambitious programme ahead of us to upgrade the network – the biggest overhaul of the grid in a generation – we need to make sure we have the right people and skills in our team to deliver this, which is why it is fantastic to welcome so many graduates into the business this week,” said SSEN Transmission managing director Rob McDonald.

He added: “Our graduates bring a huge amount of new ideas, talent and a fresh perspective to the company, and we’re thrilled to welcome the biggest ever number into our teams this year. It demonstrates that investing in our energy infrastructure and the creation of good quality jobs go hand in hand.

“We’re working to deliver an electricity network for energy security and net zero, and with so many opportunities to work on sector-leading, innovative projects right across the country, it’s an incredibly exciting time to begin a career in the energy industry.”

SSEN Transmission’s Graduate programme 2025 is now open for applications.
