EU Commission president Ursula von der Leyen has selected Danish politician Dan Jorgensen as energy commissioner, tasked with overseeing the roll-out of renewables.
She said his work will help bring down energy prices and focus on investment in clean energy.
Jorgensen will also be tasked with cutting dependencies on oil and gas, she said.
The brief also includes housing for the first time.
Jorgensen is a Social Democrat and served as Danish energy and climate minister from 2019 to 2022.
“Each member of the college is equal – and each commissioner has an equal responsibility to deliver on our priorities,” said von der Leyen.
“That means that all commissioners must work together. In this spirit, each executive vice president will also have a portfolio to focus on – for which they will have to work with other commissioners.
“Because what affects security affects democracy, what affects the economy affects society, and what affects climate and environment, also affects people and business.”
