Europe installed 6400MW of new wind power capacity in the first half of 2024 (gross installations), according to new WindEurope figures.
Onshore wind made up 83% of the figure for a total of 5.3GW, the analysis found.
The EU-27 added 5.7GW of the capacity in Europe over the same period, according to the research.
The EU is expected to build on average 22GW of new wind farms annually from 2024 to 2030 but needs to build 33GW annually to meet its 2030 climate and energy targets.
This would take the EU to 350GW by 2030. The target is 425GW.
WindEurope expects Europe’s total installed wind power capacity to exceed 450GW by 2030.
Europe ordered 9.4GW of new turbines in the first half of 2024. This was 11% up on 2023. The 9.4GW breaks down 7.4GW onshore and 2.1GW offshore.
Europe took €15.4bn of final investment decisions (FIDs) in new wind farms in the period of 2024, according to the research.
This is less than 30% of the total investment in 2023, WindEurope said, and there were only three investments in offshore sites in the first half of 2024.
Europe’s governments awarded 19.7GW of new wind capacity in auctions in the first six months of 2024: 6.5GW onshore and 13.2GW offshore.
This is already 72% of what they auctioned in the whole of 2023.
