Sunfire scoops 100MW electrolyser order

Sunfire to design 500MW electrolyser project

Sunfire has secured an order to supply a 100MW alkaline electrolyser for RWE’s 300MW GET H2 Nukleus project in Germany.

RWE is building the green hydrogen plant at the site of its gas-fired power plant in Lingen.

The German energy company has already ordered two of the three electrolysers for GET H2 Nukleus, each with a capacity of 100MW, from Linde Engineering and the electrolyser manufacturer ITM Power in 2022.

RWE has now commissioned the Sunfire and its partner Bilfinger to deliver the third electrolyser.

The contract volume is in the low three-digit million euro range.

Sunfire is already a technology partner of RWE, where a 10MW alkaline electrolyser from the Dresden-based manufacturer is part of a pilot plant at the Emsland gas-fired power plant, where RWE is testing two electrolysis processes (PEM and alkali) in operation.

Bilfinger will undertake planning tasks as well as the supply and installation of the ancillary process equipment such as water and hydrogen treatment, compression and control technology.

The order comes a few days after RWE’s final investment decision for its largest hydrogen project to date.

This was preceded by a grant notice from the federal government and the state of Lower Saxony.

Sopna Sury, COO Hydrogen at RWE Generation, said: “Construction work for the first 200MW of electrolysis capacity is progressing rapidly.

“With Sunfire and Bilfinger, we have now also contracted the elements for the expansion stage, which will go into operation in 2027.

“This is a strong signal for companies planning to convert their processes to green hydrogen.

“With the help of the pipeline and storage infrastructure of other GET H2 partners, which is being built in parallel, we will soon be able to supply green hydrogen in a demand-oriented and structured manner.”

As part of the GET H2 Nukleus project, RWE is working primarily with the grid operators Nowega and OGE to connect the production of green hydrogen with industrial customers in Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia.

In 2025, the company will commission the first 100MW electrolysis plant and by 2027, the generation capacity will be expanded to 300MW in 100MW increments.

From 2027, hydrogen from Lingen will also be fed into a hydrogen cavern storage facility that RWE Gas Storage West is building in Gronau-Epe.
