The government of Lower Bavaria in Germany has given planning approval for the second and final section of a power line between Altheim near Landshut and St. Peter in Lower Austria.
“This approval is a significant milestone for security of supply in Bavaria and Austria,” TenneT COO Tim Meyerjürgens said.
“We are modernizing this approximately 80-year-old line in order to be able to transport more solar power from Bavaria and at the same time strengthen the exchange of electricity with the Austrian pumped storage power plants.”
The modernization will make it possible to transport photovoltaic electricity to Austria, mainly produced in Bavaria, and in return to obtain stored electricity from pumped storage power plants, TenneT said.
TenneT will start construction of the line in the currently approved planning section between Adlkofen and Matzenhof immediately after approval, with initial preparation having begun in mid-July.
Almost 14,000 tons of steel and 1,800 km of conductors have already been secured for the project.
The project consists of three planning sections between Altheim and Adlkofen, Adlkofen and Matzenhof as well as Simbach and St. Peter.
TenneT received the planning approval decision for the first section from Altheim to Adlkofen in the Landshut district in the summer of 2023. Construction work is already underway there and is expected to be completed by the end of this year.
Commissioning for the new line is expected in 2027.
