UK Energy Security and Net Zero Secretary Ed Miliband has made a clean power push by 2030 a key priority of his department.
In a message to staff in the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, following his appointment, Miliband said it will be “at the heart of the new government’s agenda, leading one of the Prime Minister’s five national missions, to make Britain a clean energy superpower with zero carbon electricity by 2030, and accelerating our journey to net zero”.
Miliband said the role speaks directly to the “twin passions” that continue to motivate him.
“First, resolving the economic inequality that scars the country, and second tackling the climate crisis that imperils our world … In an unstable world, the only way to guarantee our energy security and cut bills permanently is to speed up the transition away from fossil fuels and towards homegrown clean energy”.
The other priorities include taking back control of our UK energy with Great British Energy, creating good jobs in Britain’s industrial heartlands, including a just transition for the industries based in the North Sea and leading on international climate action, based on domestic achievements.
In line with the Prime Minister’s approach, Miliband said it will be a “mission-driven department, mobilising citizens, businesses, trade unions, civil society and local government in a national effort, where everyone has a role”.
