RWE has received permits for a 660MW offshore wind farm project in the German North Sea.

The Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency has issued planning approval decisions for the first expansion stage of RWE’s North Sea Cluster offshore wind projects.

Construction of North Sea Cluster A is scheduled to start in 2025 with full commissioning scheduled for early 2027.

North Sea Cluster B will contribute a further 900MW.

RWE recently made the investment decision for the entire cluster and the suppliers for the main components have also already been selected.

RWE Offshore Wind chief executive Sven Utermohlen said: “I am very pleased that with the approvals from the BSH for the North Sea Cluster A, the lights are now green and that we can start construction at sea next year.

“We already have six wind farms off the German coasts in our portfolio.

“With the North Sea Cluster, we are continuing to drive forward the expansion of offshore wind energy.

“This is a good signal for the energy transition in Germany and for RWE.”

The North Sea Cluster will be located about 46km north of the island of Borkum and about 50km north of the island of Juist.

For the first expansion stage the production of some components has already begun.

Construction at sea is scheduled to begin next year.

The 44 wind turbines in North Sea Cluster A will have a capacity of 15MW each and are expected to be fully connected to the grid at the beginning of 2027. The electricity generated will be discharged via the DolWin Kappa converter platform.

The second expansion stage, the North Sea Cluster B, will add a further 900MW of capacity and is scheduled to start commercial operations at the beginning of 2029.

RWE is one of the world’s leading players in the offshore wind sector.
