Acciona Energía has signed a PPA with glass container manufacturer Vidrala for the supply of renewable energy that will cover between 20% and 25% of the company’s electricity needs over the next 10 years.
The contract will come into force in January 2025 and will allow Vidrala to source clean electricity for its operations at several manufacturing plants in Llodio (Álava), Caudete (Albacete), Castellar del Vallés (Barcelona) and Marinha Grande (Portugal).
All the energy will be of 100% renewable origin from Acciona Energía wind farms.
PPAs like this are part of Acciona Energía’s commercial strategy to increase medium to long-term contracts in Spain to maintain around 80% of the contracted volume compared to the rest in the wholesale market.
This is the first PPA Vidrala has integrated into its decarbonisation strategy to reduce emissions and, thanks to it, it will avoid the emission of 150,000 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere during the duration of the contract.
Together with self-consumption projects and Guarantees of Origin (GOs), PPAs make up the company’s plans for the decarbonisation of 100% of its electricity consumption by 2030.
In this way, Vidrala strengthens its position as a leader in industrial sustainability, while ensuring a cleaner, more diversified, secure and competitive energy supply, Acciona said.
Vidrala’s director of sustainability and strategy Galo Álvarez said: “This agreement marks a significant milestone in our commitment to reduce our environmental footprint and promote sustainability in our value chain.
“By partnering with Acciona Energía, we reaffirm our commitment to decarbonisation and lay the foundations for sustainable growth.”
This contract is in addition to the supply agreement that the companies have had since 2018 in Portugal, where Acciona Energía supplies renewable electricity to the Gallo Vidro and SB Vidros plants that Vidrala operates in the town of Marinha Grande.
