GreenGo has obtained the first single authorisation for the construction of an electrochemical energy storage plant (BESS) in Calabria, Italy.
The 49.5MW Cuvelli plant in Scandale, will be crucial for the Italian electricity grid, helping to maintain the balance between energy production and consumption, GreenGo said.
Strategically located near Terna’s new 380/150kV RTN station, the plant will play a crucial role in integrating renewable energies and stabilising the grid through frequency regulation and the provision of reserve capacity.
The authorisation of the new site in Scandale, issued 17 months after the application (November 2022), marks an essential step by GreenGo in the MACSE (Forward Storage Market), whose auction, is expected at the end of March 2025.
This is an initiative promoted to encourage the installation and management of storage systems in Italy.
This market will be central to the country’s energy transition, allowing more efficient energy management from renewable sources and ensuring an effective response to fluctuations in non-programmable energy production, GreenGo said.
GreenGo business development director Fabio Amico said: “The Autorizzazione Unica for the BESS plant in Scandale is a significant milestone for GreenGo.
“This project not only strengthens our position in the Italian energy market with a pipeline of 400MW but also actively contributes to the diversification of our technology portfolio.
“This is just the beginning, as we foresee further internal developments and potential acquisitions of initiatives in the field of innovative technologies that have concrete possibilities of realisation within 12/24 months to strengthen our IPP strategy.”
