50Hertz turns sod on Windanker grid connection

Berlin backs key green grid link

German grid operator 50Hertz will shortly commence onshore works on the Ostwind 3 grid connection for the Windanker offshore wind farm in the Baltic Sea.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs, Infrastructure, Tourism and Labour of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has now issued the permits for the 4 km-long land route and 10 hectare substation in the municipality of Brunzow near Lubmin.

Previously, the authority had already approved the approximately 100 km-long sea route in the territorial sea and the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) had also given the green light for the route and the construction of an offshore platform in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

The grid connections for the Ostwind 4 and Bornholm Energy Island projects are currently in the preliminary planning stage.

Reinhard Meyer, Minister of Economic Affairs, Infrastructure, Tourism and Labour of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, said: “Our ambitious goal is to cover the state’s entire energy demand for electricity, heat and mobility from renewable sources by 2035.

“To achieve this, it is necessary, among other things, to accelerate the expansion of wind energy.

“The potential of the wind power industry in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania can be significantly expanded with the development of offshore wind power.

“The Ostwind 3 grid connection helps with this.”

The wind farm planned by Iberdrola north of the island of Rügen is to be connected via the Ostwind 3 grid connection system.

The transmission capacity of the AC voltage system is 300MW.

50Hertz has already placed an order with the Dutch-Belgian joint venture HSI on the Jasmund offshore platform and is currently being built at the Stormpolder shipyard near Rotterdam.

Completion of the Ostwind 3 grid connection is scheduled for the third quarter of 2026.

In the municipality of Brünzow, between the districts of Stilow and Klein Ernsthof, the new substation is being built.

The preparatory construction measures will start in April with archaeological investigations on the construction site, the actual construction work on the substation will start in the summer of 2024 and last until the second quarter of 2026.
