Fred Olsen, Vattenfall open Muir Mhòr hub

Fred Olsen Seawind and Vattenfall have opened a strategic hub to support its Scotwind-winning 1GW floating wind JV Muir Mhòr Offshore Wind Farm.

The new office, situated on Glasgow’s Bath Street, will serve as the base for all Muir Mhòr’s development, consenting, early engineering and management.

Having been awarded seabed rights in the 2022 Scotwind auction, Fred Olsen Seawind and Vattenfall are working to an accelerated project timescale with the ambition of generating in 2030.

This would put the UK on track to meet its target of 5GW of floating wind by 2030, they said.

The project, located approximately 63km off the coast of Peterhead on the North East coast of Scotland, will utilise the site’s deep water conditions which are well-suited to floating turbine technology, in addition to local ports and the strong marine supply chain on the east coast of Scotland.

Having consulted on an early proposal with North East communities in November 2023, feedback on an updated proposal is currently being sought at a series of public engagement events, which are also taking place this week in Peterhead and Longside.

David Hinshelwood (pictured: far left), project director for Muir Mhòr Offshore Wind Farm, said: “We are delighted to be opening our new Glasgow office as a central base for our Scottish team, providing a dedicated space for core project operations, team collaboration and engagement with stakeholders in the Scottish Government, Crown Estate Scotland and wider agencies.

“This milestone underscores our commitment to delivering the highly innovative Muir Mhòr Offshore Wind Farm project in a manner which benefits Scotland’s growing offshore wind sector and journey to net zero, as well as the communities we serve.

“We look forward to continuing our work with all stakeholders – from the Scottish Government to communities in North East Scotland – as we work towards a greener, more sustainable future.”

The Muir Mhòr Offshore Wind Farm project team brings together this Scottish expertise from Fred Olsen Seawind and Vattenfall’s existing sites in Stirling and Edinburgh.
