Iberdrola-owned Neoenergia and the government of Rio de Janeiro have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to carry out studies that encourage the future execution of offshore wind power generation projects off the coast of the state.
This is the fourth MoU signature carried out by Neoenergia for the development of offshore wind generation in the country.
The company is also conducting studies to promote and evaluate the viability of offshore wind power in other states such as Rio Grande do Sul and Ceará.
Laura Porto, executive director of Renewables at Neoenergia, said: “Neoenergia has a legacy of pioneering the development of onshore wind power generation in the country.
“It is important for Brazil to prepare and position itself for this new clean and renewable source, which will be in the medium and long term.
“For the growth of this new market, it is necessary to define a regulatory framework capable of providing legal and regulatory certainty, as well as ensuring the most assertive allocation of investments.”
Acting Secretary of Energy and Marine Economy of the state of Rio de Janeiro, Felipe Peixoto, added: “With the MoU, Rio de Janeiro will have the opportunity to access information about preliminary studies about the characteristics of the region.
“We believe that the partnership with Neoenergia, which is a pioneer in onshore wind generation in the country, will be of great value for the state to promote offshore wind in the future.”
