All 12 turbines are now up and running in Ørsted’s 130MW South Fork wind farm, located in federal waters off the US state of New York.
The wind farm is located 35 miles off of Montauk on the eastern tip of Long Island.
At a 14 March announcement, New York Governor Kathy Hochul said that “this is just the beginning of New York’s offshore wind future and I look forward to continued partnership with the Biden Administration and local leaders to build a clean and resilient energy grid.”
Construction began on the wind farm in February 2022, followed by the start of turbine installation in June 2023.
This month’s announcement concludes a just-over two year construction period, and some seven years since the plan first received approval from the Long Island Power Authority in 2017.
Eversource Energy CEO Joe Nolan celebrated the plan as the first utility-scale wind farm located in federal waters.
“Building South Fork Wind was a true regional effort and couldn’t have been realized without the support and investment in ports at ProvPort in Rhode Island and the New London State Pier in Connecticut,” he said.
