Smartenergy has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Egyptian government in relation to a PtX project in the country that will produce green ammonia.
The MoU enables the Swiss renewable energy company to commence feasibility and engineering studies for the construction of a PtX plant in the country.
Smartenergy started prospecting the market and strengthening ties with local developers and partners in 2022.
“Egypt is an extraordinary market from a strategic perspective for the production and distribution of green hydrogen and its derivatives, such as eAmmonia,” said chief operating officer and deputy chief executive of Smartenergy Joao Cunha.
The project concept presented by Smartenergy, which has received approval from the Egyptian government, includes the development of 2.6GW of wind and solar to generate over 150,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually through a 1GW electrolyser.
This hydrogen will be transformed into 830,000 tons of ammonia a year, for producing fertilisers and as green fuel for the maritime sector.
The facility will serve both local and export demand.
