GE Vernova plans to focus its offshore wind business on a 15MW-plus “workhorse” version of the Haliade-X platform.
The company said it has offered 12MW to 18MW iterations of the machine but “going forward” expects to “centre” efforts around a 15.5MW unit.
The detail is contained in Securities and Exchange Commission filings in the US, which suggest the turbine will come with a rotor diameter of 250 metres.
The configuration would be an increase from the 220-metre rotor offered with the Haliade-X to date.
GE plans to focus on a 15.5MW unit, ditching an up to 18MW machine, were first reported by subscriber-only reNEWS on 8 February.
The strategy is part of a simplified, streamlined plan to focus on “workhorse” turbine offerings, including in onshore wind, according to SEC filings.
GE hopes the plan will “improve both cost and quality going forward”.
The paperwork also states the company made losses in its offshore business last year.
“During 2023, primarily as a result of changes in product and project cost estimates, we recorded additional project losses for certain Offshore Wind Haliade-X contracts of $379 million,” it said.
“Further changes in our execution timelines or other adverse developments could result in further losses beyond the amounts that we currently estimate.”
