Iberdrola has announced it will supply long-term clean energy through a PPA (Power Purchase Agreement) to Tosano supermarkets in Italy, which today has more than 19 hypermarkets and nearly 4000 employees.
The off-site deal provides for the supply of clean energy for 10 years, guaranteed by an Iberdrola solar PV system.
The agreement will see Iberdrola supplying Tosano Supermarkets with an estimated 20GWh of clean energy annually, helping to increase the company’s energy security and accelerate its path towards decarbonization.
The supply of clean energy helps the supermarket group’s plans to accelerate its decarbonization and sustainability objectives throughout north-east Italy, areas in which it is present with its stores, thanks to a reduction in CO2 emissions of about 6000 tonnes per year.
With the inauguration of its second operational plant and the completion of four plants already authorized and under construction, Iberdrola will have an operational capacity of 400MW in Italy in 2025.
“Supermercati Tosano’s medium-term Energy Plan envisages continuing with conviction on the path of energy production from renewable sources, increasing installed capacity, in order to constantly increase the self-produced share of total consumption from clean energy,” said Supermercati Tosano, chairman Andrea Tosano.
Iberdrola country manager Lorenzo Costantini added: “We are delighted to work with companies that understand the importance of being powered by renewable sources. An important choice not only for environmental sustainability, but for the company itself.
“Off-site PPA agreements, such as the one recently signed with Tosano, allow the stabilization of the price of energy in the long term and from renewable sources, eliminating the volatility inherent in the use of fossil fuels linked to the supply of energy.”
