Yunneng files €50m claim against Sapura

reNEWS EditorialBy reNEWS EditorialJanuary 31, 20242 Mins Read
Yunlin delivers first power

Yunneng Wind Power, the consortium behind the 640MW Yunlin offshore wind farm in Taiwan, has filed a €50m claim against Malaysia-based Sapura Energy over an alleged breach of contract.

According to a stock exchange announcement from Sapura, Yunneng has issued a request for arbitration against Sapura Energy and its subsidiary Sapura Offshore. These companies were contracted to transport and install the wind turbines foundations for the offshore wind farm in 2019.

However, they terminated the agreement in 2022 saying it was due to unresolved technical and operating difficulties.

Yunneng has initiated the provisional claim over alleged breaches of the contract, saying that Sapura Offshore did not comply with the agreed schedule under the contract.

This was due, the group alleges, due to Sapura being unable to deploy the relevant installation vessels required to conduct the installation of some of the structures on time.

The request for arbitration aims to suspend the statute of limitations under German law in respect of the claims, which would otherwise have expired by 31 December, 2023.

Yunneng has reserved the right to further specify and expand its claims.

Sapura has until 12 February to nominate an arbitrator and until 7 March to submit an answer.

Yunneng consists of Skyborn Renewables, TotalEnergies, Japan’s EGCO Group and Sojitz.
