TenneT has started construction on the SuedOstLink grid connection, which will supply Bavaria with wind power from the north and east of Germany from 2027.
Work began on the of the 780km direct current line at the converter site in ISAR near Landshut.
Once complete, SuedOstLink will have the capacity to transport a total of 4GW of electricity from the north of Germany to the south to the Isar grid node near Landshut.
The converter at the ISAR site, which is handed over to TenneT on a turnkey basis by Siemens Energy, converts the transported direct current into alternating current.
“SuedOstLink is a significant milestone on the way to a secure, independent and cost-efficient power supply in Bavaria,” said TenneT Managing Director Tim Meyerjurgens.
“So that we can go into operation from 2027, we are continuing to work at full speed on construction – but always with a focus on the safety of everyone involved.
“In the future, SuedOstLink will supply millions of Bavarian households as well as industry and commerce with green electricity from northern and eastern Germany. However, this will not be enough to ensure Bavaria’s climate neutrality by 2040. In addition, we urgently need power plant capacity in the south as well as further expansion at the transmission and distribution network level.”
