Vestas to bring Utopus in house

Vestas unveils nacelle factory plan in India

Vestas is to fully integrate its wholly-owned energy analytics solution provider Utopus Insights into its internal set-up.

The move will see both Utopus Insights’ technology and large parts of its team transitioning fully into the Vestas organisation as part of an updated digital organisation, due to be launched in January 2024.

Currently an independent unit, Utopus Insights’ separate legal entity will cease.

Christian Venderby, executive vice president of service, Vestas and current chair of Utopus Insights’ board, said: “The Scipher platform from Utopus Insights holds great potential for Vestas.

“In our internal operations, it will enable to further strengthen our core business and drive efficiency.

“This will make our approach to servicing wind projects more effective for our customers, as well as support increased profitability in our business.

“Commercially, we can expand our solutions offering, driving more digital maturity for wind energy.

“Expanding our leadership on both fronts also allows us to transfer more value back to our shareholders in 2024 and beyond.”

Through the integration, Vestas aims to expand its digital solutions offering for asset management, with strengthened forecasting and plant analysis capabilities, alongside leveraging the Scipher platform to drive efficiencies in its service business through predictive maintenance activities.

Vestas will also continue to support Utopus Insights’ existing commercial commitments, while new commercial activity from Utopus Insights will be handled through Vestas.

Utopus Insights was founded in 2017, offering Scipher, a software-as-a-service analytics platform for renewable energy asset owners and operators.

In 2018, it was acquired by Vestas, and was operated as an independent unit, in close collaboration with the Vestas organisation.

Vestas has identified that further developing the technological platform with more direct access to its extensive operational footprint will significantly accelerate Scipher’s capabilities, as well as its potential to drive digital maturity across the wind industry.
