Solarpro and Hithium are collaborating on a battery energy storage system (BESS) project that will support an existing 33MW solar installation in Bulgaria.
Stationary battery manufacturer Hithium and solar project EPC provider Solarpro have announced a strategic partnership and will deliver their first project in Razlog, Bulgaria, which is a BESS with a 55 megawatt hour capacity.
The facility owner will be a subsidiary of the Vienna-based power producer Renalfa.
The investor decided to co-locate the big battery with its existing 33MW solar plant, which is situated in an area that has some of Bulgaria’s highest levels of irradiation.
Construction of the new facility is planned for the start of 2024 and will be one of the largest BESS installations in south-east Europe.
“As the region’s utility-scale solar production ramps up, energy storage is gaining importance since it enables us to deliver solar-generated energy more reliably,” said Solarpro chief executive Krasen Mateev.
He added: “We are very pleased to take this step with Hithium to accelerate the growth of energy storage in eastern Europe.
“We have been working on preparation, engineering and development on the joint solution over the past months for this landmark project.
“We are dedicated to lead the energy transition adding new technologies in our product portfolio.”
