Representatives of the Ukrainian government, the transmission system operator Ukrenergo and Notus energy signed a joint declaration of intent on the development of a wind farm in the Chernobyl exclusion zone.
According to an initial feasibility analysis by Notus Energy Group, the area offers the potential for 1GW of wind power.
The declaration was signed on the sidelines of German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock’s visit to Ukraine this week.
“Our project in the Chernobyl Special Administrative Region is of outstanding importance in several respects,” said Hannes Helm, managing director of Notus Energo Ukraina, the Ukrainian development company of the Notus Energy Group.
“A wind farm of this size would make a substantial contribution to the expansion of renewable energies in Ukraine and strengthen the independence and decentralization of the Ukrainian energy supply,” added Helm.
With the joint declaration of intent, the partners agreed to examine the concrete implementation of the project, including determining the condition of the existing network infrastructure and identifying potentially suitable areas based on a radiation assessment and carrying out an environmental impact assessment.
The declaration of intent was signed by Oleksandr Krasnolutskyi, First Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources, Andrij Tymchuk, Acting Head of the State Agency for the Exclusion Zone, Wolodymyr Kudrytskyi, Chairman of the Board of the Transmission System Company Ukrenergo and Helm for Notus Energy.
